Welcome! I have always been interested in transportation. This channel has a variety of railroad content (mostly past and some present) and a little bit of airplane stuff. You may see an occasional boat video. I am originally from Elkhart, Indiana (now reside in Northern California). The B&O main across Northern Indiana was my fascination back in the 80s and early 90s so I have a lot of footage of it from those days. Amtrak F40PHs are my favorite locomotive, as they were ubiquitous with my childhood so you will see a lot of that here, as well. I shot mostly video over the decades, but I also recorded audio quite a bit, too. Please do not use any of my recordings or videos without my permission.

Burnham, IL & Hammond, IN Trains 1986-1987
NS, CSS&SB, IHB, CSX, Amtrak, and Conrail. Several “bottle” (hot metal) trains are seen in these videos, as they were frequent users of the Conrail SC&S line - the Bernice Cutoff.
The Amtrak trains have appeared in some of my previous videos, but this will hopefully provide some additional context for them. Amtrak ran on the SC&S from Bernice to Colehour Jct.
Note that from April 27, 1986 to October 25, 1987 Amtrak referred to 317/318 (as well as 50/51) as “The Cardinal.” Here are the schedule references:

Amtrak F40PH # 307 [Audio & Video] - 1983-1989
Просмотров 138Месяц назад
Here is the audio (and 1 video) that I have of AMTK F40PH 307. It had a super K5LA in the early 1980s. It also had unusual narrow number boards which were replaced in the mid 1980s. After retirement, AMTK 307 eventually wound its way to the North Carolina Transportation Museum. These were all recorded in Elkhart, Indiana except for the video, which was recorded in Chicago. 00:00 Clayton Ave. - ...

Amtrak F40PH # 302 [Audio & Video] 1984-1988

Here are the audio & video recordings I have of AMTK 302. It had a uniquely-fouled K5LA for years, but after the unit was rebuilt it received a new horn. Also unique to 302 is before the rebuild it had all-black side numbers without the white outlines. It is worth noting that when compared with other locomotives from this order, 302 has been a survivor; having served post-Amtrak on NS, NJT, MBT...

Here is the majority of my collection of audio & video recordings of AMTK F40PHR 298. I caught it mostly on the Michigan trains. This is all audio, except for one clip. In December 1988 AMTK 298 was involved in a grade crossing accident in Van Wert, OH, while leading the westbound Capitol Limited. In the last recording (1989) 298 had been rebuilt with a different horn, as well as bell and also ...

US 6 parallels the CSX (ex-B&O) main between Nappanee and Bremen, Indiana for about 4 miles. We start out pacing a slow westbound freight led by CSX 6163 and CSX 4201. My dad and I were able to chase him to Teegarden, as he was only going about 35mph. At the overpass, it was pretty neat that the engineer dimmed the headlight for us. What a fantastic K5LA horn, too. Its weird seeing old railroad footage of the area you grew up in, Ive never been able to find much old video coverage of the R line and SB line, awesome stuff dude!
Much appreciated. Thank you!
I Was Born A Year Later And I Never Go There Untill Now,
I like watching those videos on trains
201 was scrapped around 1997 at beech Grove shops
12:28 288
17:59 390
the original NS road triple crown
Amtrak f40ph 216 would get an m5 horn in 1998-1999
8:51 this is my favorite part
I almost forgot how trains looked without graffiti all over them.
Amtrak’s cardinal travels Kentucky and West Virginia and through the new river gorge
Not the train in this video. This one was just Indy to Chicago.
Amtrak’s capitol limited travels on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad and it departs Washington DC and it goes through Maryland West Virginia Pennsylvania Ohio Indiana and Illinois
Goshen IN native - spent many days in the 80s and 90s along the ex NYC, B&O and Wabash lines in that area. Thanks for this!
Was this during electrification of the North Jersey coast line being extended to Long Branch
I think the project was just getting started in 1986. It was completed 7-2-1988.
Amtrak F40PH 307 is being converted to an NPCU with an HEP generator.
how did, of all things a GT caboose get on early CSX.
I lived a few blocks north of there in Hegewisch from 2003-2019. Our house was right on the old SC&S at 130th st. I would have loved to have seen all the rail traffic come by the house. The rails were pulled up north of 133rd by the time we lived there.
Nice Video!
He enjoyed watching Gunsmoke on television and tinkering with lawnmowers.
Always Kool for me seeing a Chessie rolling, Appreciate you sharing.
I work in Hammond and wow the railroad scene has totally changed. It is neat seeing the old Monon being repurposed by NICTD
I wonder what year was when all US railroads started to install ditch lights on all their locomotives was it 1992 or 1993?
They were mandated by the FRA by the end of 1997, but started appearing on locomotives (particularly the new orders) towards the end of 1992. Some railroads like BN & CR used ditch strobe lights a little earlier than that.
@@wmuzeke very cool
When did the Cardinal and Hoosier State stop using the SC&S at Burnham?
At the end of June 1993.
Cool videos. My first visit there was also in 1986..... November I think. We even got the coal train with P&LE caboose that day too! About those GC steel trains: I am aware of at least one time they made the turn at Warsaw and ran over the ex-PRR mainline instead which must've required changing direction at Warsaw. Crazy times.
Interesting that the GCM would go on the PRR. That definitely would have required some run around work at Winona siding. Thanks for the comments!
Lol 6:45. "DID YOU SEE THOSE WEIRD LOOKIN ENGINES THEYVE GOT?"
I grew up in Hegewisch which is a Chicago neighborhood along the border of Burnham, in this video. It's so cool to see what rail action looked like before my time! I was born in 2000 and in my childhood saw a lot of Conrail power, plus the railroads you'd see in these areas today. Things look so similar yet so different from what I grew up with. This is so cool! Looking forward to seeing more!
Appreciate the comments. Thanks!
Not from there but came to see the time of history and ended up seeing F40 Amtrak runbys, huge fan of F40s
Ive always hated those crossings on burnham ave. And brainard
@@fasteddiesgarage5000 Those crossings on Burnham Avenue have always been a major hazard and dangerous!! I sure hope no School Buses use that crossing!!! Even today! The lengthy freight trains on both the Norfolk & Southern and the South Shore Line do cause major traffic tie ups on Burnham Avenue.
Which ones did they get rid of? Was it Torrance are the Ford plant on 130th Street no longer graded?
@@truckerkevthepaidtourist I think Torrence Avenue is now grade separated from the Norfolk & Southern Railroad crossing. Burnham Avenue has still crossings of the South Shore Line and the Norfolk & Southern. 130th Street is now I believe grade separated from the Norfolk & Southern.
@@albertcarello619 correct, 130th and Torrence is now completely grade separated.
@@vxla Now less traffic jams being free of freight trains crossing. This grade separation projects sure seemed to take forever! Thank heavens it's finally done.
LOTS of lines used the corridors through Burnham to reach Chicago! Michigan Central, Nickel Plate, C&O, South Shore, Erie Lakawanna and B&O too I think. Still busy today.
@@spaceghost8995 Erie Lackawanna was abandoned on April 1st 1976 by Conrail. C&O and B&O merged to form the Chesie System and now both run on the former B&OCT and C&O discontinued running on the Erie Lackawanna shortly after May of 1976 and on the former Chicago & Western Indiana owned tracks.
@@albertcarello619 Yes . Sadly EL did not survive when Conrail was formed. Conrail already had the former NYC and Nickel Plate lines to get to Chicago. The EL and the Wabash among others were eliminated. The late 1960's and 1970's were a crazy time with what with mergers and abandonments all over.
I very much enjoyed this video, its very relaxing and reminds me of the days of the Cotton Belt Route out of Pine Bluff,AR. In 1986, I would have been 10 years old. Such a great childhood experience watching trains
Thank you for posting this video with all of these fallen flags. These were my Railroads growing up in CIncinnati
Awesome video!
Love hearing the 2nd clip from time to time, 201 was one of the first NHV F40s to be outshopped in the winter of 87 came out of beech grove with this P5 and still had the bars over the window till the summer of 88. My cousin had his first cab ride at 5 years old with my Dad in 201 to Boston February 1988
Good video! To see a Chessie System stack train is very interesting and a caboose at the end makes it even cool!
The IHB grain train for Irondale coming up the SC&S was awesome to see, too
Good Lord this is great. Having dispatched State Line for IHB it is really cool to see how it was a while back
I really like the IHB. Interesting rr that goes through some interesting industrial areas
I used to ride on the chesie engines when i was a kid my dad worked for csx brings back cool memories good video
I use to drive down to these areas just to train watch. Plenty to see anytime!!!
This is great video, some caught on cold days. Love seeing the old Nickel Plate signals. Thanks!!! Also a question, Is the Bernice Cutoff gone? I thought I read that it was pulled up before the CSX/NS takeover of Conrail. Hard to find info on that line. Thanks again.
There are a couple of small sections still intact, but most of it has been removed. Calumet Park to Bernice was removed a while back ~ 25-30 years ago, along with the PRR to Munster section that Amtrak used to access the Monon. Rails are still in place and used from Calumet Park to the B&OCT wye just south of Burnham. A recent photo shows the SC&S is out of service across the diamonds to 135th St. and looks like it might be removed in the near future. The rails are cut on the south side of Brainard Ave. Two blocks are still used from 135th St. to 132nd. North of there, the right branch (that part Amtrak used) is long gone to Colehour Jct. That section was removed about the same time as the south portion. It's now a bike trail from Wolf Lake up to Indianapolis Ave.
@@wmuzeke Thanks for the update!
